Earthworms

ImageThe earthworms are of the red and tiger varieties, and are housed near the pig pens in their own worm farm. They are used to process our food scraps and to develop worm castings, which we then use on our gardens and to sell to the public, for their home gardens.

Worm castings are very beneficial for the garden, another wonderful form of recycling and they don't smell. The castings are rich in plant nutrients, trace elements, growth enhancers and they increase good microbial growth at the root zone. The castings are what remains after kitchen scraps, garden waste, straw, paper and manure have passed through the worms gut. Because the castings are derived from previous successful plant growth the elements in the castings are properly balanced. Therefore the castings are never too rich and they will not burn plants or seedlings.

Castings can be applied as a top dressing in garden beds, on lawns and in pots (including house plants) and then be watered in.

Castings may also be dug into soil similar to digging in compost. They can be used to assist germination
when used as an ingredient in potting mix, or a handful can be put under each plant when putting in new
plantings. When mixed with water and applied as a spray worm casting tea can be used as a root wash to
assist with successful transplanting or if a plant has been broken or eaten by insects a spray with this tea
will help the plant to heal by inoculating the damaged area with good bacteria. These bacteria are present
in the worms gut to aid with digestion and are present in the castings. These bacteria repel pathogens in
the soil and so they contribute to the overall health of the soil.   Our worm farm inhabitants have been
working hard each day eating roughly half their own body weight in food. Every few weeks we sift the worm
beds, to harvest the castings and bag them up for people to purchase at the Farmers’ Market and each
day at reception.
