We are thrilled to have been voted Australia’s Outstanding Farmers’ Market at the 2010 delicious magazine national Produce Awards. “The Collingwood Children’s Farm farmers’ market is unquestionably one of the most popular in the country,” says Jane Adams of the Australian Farmers’ Market Association. Established in 2002, the community-owned market brings more than 50 Victorian producers to inner-city Melbourne on the second Saturday of each month, and was one of the first farmers’ markets to be accredited for authenticity in May this year.
We also congratulate medallists at the awards who are stallholders at our market:
- ANGELICA ORGANIC FARM - GARLIC (VIC)
- DAYLESFORD ORGANICS - VEGETABLES (VIC)
- MOONDARRA BLUEBERRIES (VIC)
- MT ALEXANDER FRUIT GARDENS - ORGANIC FRUIT (VIC)
- SUNSALT MURRAY RIVER - PINK SALT (VIC)
- WARIALDA BELTED GALLOWAY - BEEF (VIC)
…and particularly Holy Goat Cheese who won the From the Dairy category with their fabulous La Luna, available every month at the farmers’ market
Since 2002, Victoria’s farmers and specialty makers have gathered on the 2nd Saturday every month where you find fresh, seasonal fruit and veg, free range meat, turkey, chooks & eggs, olives & oil, icecream, dairy & handmade cheeses, honey, cakes & breads, jams & chutneys, fresh pasta, flowers & seedlings plus plenty for brekkie, freshly brewed coffee and chai while you shop. And that’s just the beginning….
The Farm has its own stall with seasonal produce from the farm plus our fabulous tussie mussies and no food miles whatsoever! The pancake stall supports our Young Farmers program and is run by volunteers.
Our market is accredited by the Victorian farmers’ Market Association so you can be sure all our stallholders are the growers and makers of the goods they sell. Real food direct to you. Please help spread the word and look for the symbol of authenticity www.vicfarmersmarkets.org.au
“Accreditation of Farmers’ Market stallholders ensures that people are buying goods that are directly from farmers and makers and that customers dollars are going straight back to regional communities,” explains Miranda Sharp, VFMA President. “The upcoming accreditation of farmers’ markets themselves will allow people to easily identify genuine markets which are what they claim to be with no re-sellers.”
Farmers’ markets will gain accreditation under the VFMA Accreditation Program through a rigorous process once they have no less than 90% of stallholders accredited in metropolitan areas and no less than 75% in regional areas. Now when you visit a farmers’ market in Victoria accredited stallholders are displaying an accreditation logo on their stall and a certificate of authenticity.
And that proudly includes Collingwood Children’s Farm Farmers’ Market, Melbourne’s first.
Our market is one of four community owned farmers’ markets in Melbourne which make up a circuit every Saturday morning. If you’d like to find out more, or to receive our monthly newsletter, go to www.mfm.com.au
